A Miniature Clay Pot

Hi Friends,

This blog was really started as a branch off from my first blog, which is a paper crafting blog.  Sometimes I rambled on when I was suppose to be just posting artwork. Eventually some folks came just for the rambling while others only wanted to view the paper crafts, so I started a second blog, just for rambling :)

2012 was a year of highest highs and lowest lows for our family, and lotsa, lotsa activity and change so I spent very little time in my craft room and even less time on the blog. Lately I have been craving that creative time and thinking about the reason why.

Scripture says that we are created in the image of God.  And God is THE CREATOR.  So I suspect, that because we are in His image, each of us has a bent towards creativity.  What’s yours?  If I had my druther I would create beautiful jewelry like this woman does: Bits and Pieces Artwork  (I have neither the patience nor the eyesight) or music (don’t even get me started on THAT) or take stunning photographs, but mostly the only things I manage to make (besides lots of kids lol) are cards and scrapbooks and calendars.  I particularly like card making because it’s quick, easy and cards can be used to encourage or thank the amazing people in my life.

How about you?  What brings you a sense of joy and satisfaction to create?  Poems? pottery?  Painting? Drawing? Photography? Creating baked goods or gourmet meals? Cards? Jewelry? Music?  Theater?  Sewing?  For some of  you it’s probably all of the above! I’d love to hear about YOUR creativity. Perhaps you have link to your own work that you’d be willing to share?

Matthew 5:16 says Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. That should be the motivation behind all we do!

Here’s today’s first creation, made in between loads of laundry and a creating a pot of southwestern chicken soup :) I hope to spend a few more hours in the craft room before attending a high school play with the HH.

Have a great weekend and take some time to be creative!

Grateful for this wonderful life,

  1. I love doing craft work like card making but mine are no where near as impressive as yours!

  2. Beautiful cards! I love them. Making cards isn’t one of my talents…sending them to encourage others is more like it. I’m also more talented with photography and writing.

  3. I like your cards you show here. Lately I crochet for gifts and relaxation, and I’ve not been doing as much as I need to. You’re right that creative arts are a need rather than a want, but time and work don’t often cooperate. It was approximately 30 years ago that I literally lost my mind after a miscarriage, and part of the therapy in the hospital was painting plaster images. I found that to be profoundly comforting, and continued for about 20 years, but I don’t have any of my projects left, I’ve gifted, sold, or lost all of them. It doesn’t really matter, though, the real value of them was in the feeling of watching them come to life in my care.

    • Sandi, it sounds like you have a lot of life stories to share. Some day when you have time I’d like to hear more about your miscarriage and how it impacted you. Love that you use your creativity to bless others Hugs from Colorado.

  4. This post made me smile. :) I created our blog mainly for our farm journey, but it’s mostly full of my rambles, lol! I LOVE to make crafts from “stuff” we have laying around – and I also love to write a poem now and then. Lately I’ve had fun adding Scripture to photos I’ve taken, and pray-crocheting…memorizing/praying verses for the person who will be receiving the finished product. I’m quite positive I would also love to make cards & scrapbook, which is exactly why I haven’t started, lol… I’ve got plenty here to keep me busy for many years, Lord willing. :) You may notice that I’ve noted quotes from you in my “raw rambles” journaling, too – your writing has been a blessing to me… so thank you! :)

    The blog is http://www.robertsfarm2004.wordpress.com.

    • Omigosh…I just read your last post and cracked up. This part right here:
Then I thought how funny it was that here I am admiring chickens, both real & decorative, when I have a fear of the flapping wings of birds… Through glass, I can admire live ones, just don’t ask me to catch/touch one, lol…
made me think we are kindred spirits! Looking forward to reading more posts in the future :)

    • I’m another one with the rooster/chicken thing. My whole kitchen is decorated with roosters and a few hens. I admire the live ones, from a distance. I am absolutely petrified of them otherwise! I guess they are one of God’s creations that I admire artistically, but a rooster chased me and bit me when I was very young and I do NOT want to be around them. Funny how three of us said that. I wonder how many others are that way?

  5. I love crocheting, photography, sewing and am getting ready to learn to knit. Oh, and polymer clay…I love playing in the clay! My guy makes jewelry and I sometimes help with those designs, too.

  6. I love to scrapbook. I’ve done a lot of other artistic things over the years but this seems to be the one that stuck. The problem is that my mom and I usually did it together and she died last May. I have been too busy to do anything creative for 6 months, just getting her stuff taken care of. Now I am faced with a craft room that is in chaos because I moved a sofa out and moved her roll top desk in and everything is boxed with no rhyme or reason. I have put a couple of good sessions in but it’s been rough. My faith has sustained me well in my grief but this process is bringing back a whole lot of memories, good and bad. I had to quit today and lie down. Then I got online and found your topic. I always enjoy reading your blogs but it was blessed that I read this topic today I think.

    • So sorry to hear of your loss, Sheryl. My mom passed away this past year as well, but it was a different kind of grief for me (I can’t imagine the two of us crafting together!) I will pray for you (and for your craft room project) and for the joy of crafting to once again be a part of your life. I feel as though scrapbooking – especially journaling – is beneficial to the grief process. (I am planning to scrapbook a few pages about the theater shooting when I feel like I am ready for it!) Keep me updated on how you are doing please!

    • Sheryl, just be patient with yourself. It takes time to process not just grief, bu the “stuff” of grief. My mom’s death is coming up on its second anniversary end of March, but May was her birthday, as well as the birthday and death anniversary of one aunt. And yes, the Lord will walk you through. He knows how it feels to lose people He loves.

  7. I absolutely believe we were created to create! You create so much more than kids and cards! I LOVE my calendar! :-) And, I love that you create joy in others through your sharing and your ministry. I love that you create laughter through “Marie Moments” and your wonderful sense of humor. So many people I know think they are “not creative” because they don’t have an artistic craft or hobby…yet are so very creative in so many ways. And, all this talk on creativity is going to inspire me to head to the Creative Cave a bit later tonight for some gourd work! :-) And, who knows? Maybe I’ll even start blogging again one of these days!

    • Val, you are so right about some people thinking they are not creative because they don’t have an artistic type hobby but they are many ways of being creative. (I personally said I could never scrapbook or make cards after seeing all of the projects some of my friends did. I never even tried it until I made a scrapbook for one of the kids’ friends as a Christmas gift…then I was hooked!)
Your woodburning art is amazing and I look forward to reading your wise and witty words again :) Love you lots!

  8. In Macon, GA, we are doing Truth Be Told Art. A local Christian art teacher started this program. A group of ladies get together and paint a certain picture with the help of an experienced teacher guiding us. Each picture will contain your favorite Bible verse. You can check this out on FB. You can see lots of examples.

  9. Poetry, prose, singing, songwriting, gardening, quick little crafts (homemade Valentines, for instance), cooking, baking, making up new recipes. I used to draw & paint as a child, but got intimidated by more skilled artists. I’ve talked with a friend at church that maybe someday I’ll get the courage (and the time!) to try it again, maybe take lessons, if I can find someone to help me get healed & past the critical, impatient art teachers I had in junior high…

Also need a techi friend to help me figure out how to blog. I tried once & couldn’t figure out how to post anything. I even had a FB friend recently try to help me by emailing some instructions from her blog site. I just need a tutor.

  10. Baking and writing. Sadly, I eat what I bake and then sit all day to write. Not a good combination!

  11. I don’t know how or when exactly it started, but instead of writing fiction (which I LOVE to do), God has gifted me with writing devotionals to spread His message of mercy, grace, love, hope and joy. I also enjoy crocheting because it is a creative thing to do when I can’t do much else (several chronic pain illnesses). That’s it for my creative side but these days that’s enough.

    Blessings to you, Marie!
    ~Anna

  12. I enjoy searching the Scriptures for affirmations of the heart God calls us to have. Never really thought of this as a craft or a creative thing but it is what I get the most joy out of…it is my craft. And like the card, it is what is on the inside that counts the most. Glad God reveals Himself and His delights in each of our delights! Blessings!

  13. I too believe we were created to create. My husband creates order and peace. My middle son creates joy just with his smile. I use words to express myself and to create something beautiful. I started a blog to share with others our adoption story, but it has evolved into more, or at least I hope it has. Some posts are more interesting than others, some better written than others, but all of them are a piece of me that I offer up as a gift to God.

  14. I pulled out my sewing machine last week for the first time in probably 10 years. Oh how I LOVED sewing and sewing and sewing. I completed 5 home decor projects. see: http://www.ourjourneyoffaith.net/2013/02/mama-has-been-sew-busy.html

Then . . . I spent all day Friday and Saturday Scrapbooking with girlfriends. So. Much. Fun. I usually get the chance to scrapbook for a weekend once or twice per year, but this year I have been BLESSED with many opportunities. (once in September, once in October, this weekend, 2 weekends from now, and 3 weekends from now) Yes. I get 3 scrapbooking weekends in just 4 weeks’ time. Thanks to my AMAZING husband who holds down the fort with my young ones.

As the homeschooling mother of 12 children, crafts (especially scrapbooking and card making) have always been important for me because it gives me a “finished product”. As the homeschooling mama of many, the majority of my life is spent on “unfinished products” aka: my kids. So, there is much JOY and satisfaction in being able to hold something up and say, “I finished this. I did it.”

    Laurel :)
